How to Sell GEO to Your Clients: Script, Objections, Upsell
Updated August 31, 2026
Selling AI visibility isn't explaining what GEO is — it's showing the client who AI recommends when their buyer asks, and that it isn't them. Everything else is follow-through. Here's the script that works, objections included.
The hook: evidence, not theory
Before the meeting, run 3–5 of the client's commercial queries ("best [their trade] in [their city]") and capture the answers. With the AI citations tool it takes a minute per query: whether AI cites them, and which sources it cites instead.
The opening script is short:
- "Your customers already ask AI." No need to argue how many; it's enough that they recognize they use ChatGPT themselves.
- "This is what AI answers today when people ask about your business." Show the capture. If a competitor shows up, the sale nearly closes itself.
- "This can be measured and worked, exactly like SEO 15 years ago." And here you present the service: weekly measurement, concrete fixes, verified results.
If you also bring a printed instant audit of their domain, you arrive with a diagnosis instead of a promise — the full flow is in the audit as a sales hook.
The four objections, answered honestly
"It's a fad." Maybe — but their buyer is already there, and today's AI answers cite somebody. The question isn't whether AI stays; it's whether they want it recommending their competitor in the meantime. Besides, the groundwork (clean sources, structured data, citable content) also improves classic SEO: it's not a single-channel bet.
"Can you guarantee I'll show up?" No — and distrust anyone who guarantees it. Generative answers are probabilistic. What can be guaranteed is the process: measurement against a baseline, prioritized fixes, and verification of what worked. That honesty differentiates you and protects the renewal.
"I already pay for SEO — isn't this the same?" They share foundations, but SEO optimizes for a list of results and this for an answer that cites 3–5 sources. The full difference is here — and the commercial close is simple: "that's why it sells as an extension of your retainer, not a duplicate service".
"Why through you and not a tool I subscribe to myself?" Because the tool measures; the judgment about what to do with the measurement is yours. The self-serve client opens the tool twice and abandons it — what they buy from you is someone watching it weekly and acting.
The upsell on the retainer
For clients already paying for SEO, the lowest-friction path is the retainer extension: an additional monthly fee at the low end of the price ranges, with setup billed separately. The opening email fits in four lines: what changed (AI answers now cite sources in their sector), what you found (their gap, with a screenshot), what you propose (a monthly extension), and a date to see it in 20 minutes.
At renewal, the argument is the report: if every month the client gets their report under your brand, with progress against baseline and a business-language interpretation, renewing becomes a formality.
What you need before selling
Not much: a tool that measures and alerts without eating your hours (with AEON42 Agency each client gets their own workspace, portal and monthly branded report), your price ranges decided, and two or three evidence captures from the prospect's sector. The rest is calendar.
Frequently asked questions
- Which clients should I offer it to first?
- The ones whose buyer asks AI: mid-to-high-ticket local services (health, legal, home), B2B with long decision cycles, and any client who has already asked whether they show up in ChatGPT. That last one is already sold; only the price is missing.
- What if the client doesn't appear in any AI at all?
- That's the best commercial starting point: the gap is visible, the baseline is zero, and any progress is demonstrable. The conversation shifts from "why would I pay for this?" to "who is taking my customers in the meantime?".
- What's the fastest way to open the conversation?
- With evidence, not theory: run the client's commercial queries and show them who AI recommends today. Five minutes of demonstration beat any slide deck.
