What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing your presence so that your brand and content appear — and get cited — inside the answers that AI engines generate: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and the like.
Where traditional SEO works to rank a link in a list of results, GEO works to make your site the source the AI uses to build its answer. More and more, the user no longer clicks through: they read the answer. If you are not in it, you do not exist for that search.
How it differs from SEO
- SEO: you optimize to rank on a results page (SERP) full of blue links.
- GEO: you optimize to be cited inside an answer synthesized by a language model.
The good news: they share the same foundation. AI engines are fed in large part by the same content Google indexes, so solid SEO is the starting point for GEO. What is new is the layer of citability and AI crawler access.
The three signals that move the needle most
- AI crawler access. If your
robots.txt(or your CDN) blocks GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or Google-Extended, the AI cannot read you. Learn how to allow AI crawlers so your content is reachable. - Citable content. Direct answers, concrete data, clear definitions, headings that answer questions. AI prefers passages it can extract and attribute.
- Structure and trust. Structured data (schema), an llms.txt file, authorship, and experience signals (E-E-A-T).
The metric that matters: presence frequency
In GEO, a single position is noise. What counts is how often you show up in AI answers across your set of key queries, and what share you hold against your competitors (share of voice). Measuring one prompt once tells you nothing; measuring the same prompt set over time tells you whether you are gaining or losing ground.
How to get started
- Define your key queries (the real questions your customer asks).
- Measure your current visibility in the AI engines for those queries.
- Unblock the AI crawlers and publish citable content.
- Measure again and compare your presence frequency over time.

Frequently asked questions
- Does GEO replace SEO?
- No. GEO complements SEO. AI search engines are fed in large part by the same content Google indexes, so good SEO remains the foundation; GEO adds the layer of getting cited inside the generated answers.
- How is AI visibility measured?
- It is measured by tracking, across your key queries, how often the AI engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) mention or cite you, in what position, and with which source. Presence frequency matters more than any single position.
- What do I need for AI to cite my site?
- AI crawlers must be able to reach your content (robots.txt), content that is clear and citable, structured data (schema), and trust signals. An llms.txt file and a sitemap help engines understand you.
