The Search Console Generative AI Report: What It Shows and What It Doesn't
By Fernando Balcázar · Updated October 26, 2026
Since June 2026, Google Search Console has generative AI performance reports: they show how often your pages appeared inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, and, in a separate view, inside Discover's AI features. Google started with a subset of sites; since late August 2026 it's available to everyone.
The short version: the report tells you which pages show up in Google's AI answers and how often. It doesn't tell you for which queries, whether anyone clicked, or what happens in other assistants.
What the report shows
- Impressions of your pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
- By page: which of your URLs appear in those answers.
- By country and by device (device only in the Search view).
- By date: hourly, daily, weekly or monthly.
That data was already inside the overall performance report. The new report splits it out so you can look at it alone; your totals don't change.
What it doesn't show
- Queries. You don't see which questions surfaced your page.
- Clicks, CTR or position. Impressions only: you can't tell whether people clicked from the AI answer or where in it you appeared.
- Other engines. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and the Gemini app are out of scope.
- Competitors. You don't see who Google cites when it doesn't cite you.
How to use it
- Find the pages that already show up in AI answers. Sort by impressions: those are the pages Google already uses as sources. Be careful when you edit them.
- Cross-check with the main report. Open the same page in the regular performance report and look at its queries. It hints at which questions may have produced the AI impressions, though it isn't an exact match.
- Compare before and after a change. If you rewrote a page to answer better, compare its AI impressions over equal periods before and after.
- Check by country. If you sell in several markets, you'll see where your content makes it into AI answers.
How to fill the gaps
The report answers "do I show up in Google's AI?" at the page level. To learn for which questions you appear, who gets cited instead of you, and what happens outside Google, you need to measure with your own queries:
- Check a single query with the free Does Google's AI cite you? tool, which shows whether Google AI Overviews cites your site and which sources it cites.
- Take the AI visibility test to see whether an assistant with web search knows and recommends your company.
- If you want to track it every week, in Google and in the other assistants, that's what AEON42's AI visibility does.

Frequently asked questions
- Does the generative AI report show clicks from AI Overviews?
- No. It only shows impressions: how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It has no clicks, CTR, position, or the queries behind those impressions.
- Does it cover ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity?
- No. It only covers Google's generative AI features: AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search, plus Discover's AI features in a separate view. Other assistants you have to measure yourself.
- Why is my report empty?
- If your pages didn't appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode during the period, there are no impressions to show. Try a longer date range and make sure Googlebot can crawl your pages.
- Are AI impressions added on top of the main performance report?
- No. That data was already part of the overall performance report; the generative AI report splits it out so you can see it on its own. Your totals don't change.
