How to Appear in Google AI Mode
By Fernando Balcázar · Updated October 26, 2026
Google AI Mode is Google's conversational search: instead of a list of links, it replies with AI-written text, cites its sources and lets people ask follow-up questions. To appear there you need the same things as for regular search, with one important nuance: AI Mode doesn't just search your question, it searches several related ones at once.
AI Mode vs AI Overviews
They get confused a lot because both are Google's and both use AI, but they work differently:
| AI Overviews | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Above the regular results | In a separate search experience |
| When it appears | Only on some searches | When the person chooses that mode |
| Format | A summary | A conversation with follow-ups |
| How it searches | From the original search | Splits the question into several related searches |
| Best for | Direct questions | Complex questions, comparisons and planning |
You can appear in one and not the other, so it's worth checking them separately. For the summary in search results, read how to appear in Google AI Overviews.
How it finds its sources
Google has explained that AI Mode uses a technique it calls query fan-out: it splits the question into subtopics, runs several searches at the same time and combines the results into a single answer.
An example: if someone asks "what to do on a weekend in Austin with kids", AI Mode may search separately for kids' activities, family restaurants and areas to stay. Your page can get cited even if it doesn't rank for the original question, as long as it answers one of those subtopics well.
1. Cover the questions around your topic
Because AI Mode searches subtopics, a page that answers only the main question isn't enough. It helps to have content that answers the questions that naturally come next:
- If you sell software, besides "what it is", answer pricing, integrations, who it isn't for and how it compares.
- If you're a local service, besides "what we offer", answer areas, hours, timelines and concrete cases.
This isn't about writing dozens of similar pages, which would only make you compete with yourself. It's about every important question having a good answer, on a page or in a clear section.
2. Make each section stand on its own
AI Mode may cite one part of your page for a subtopic. It helps when every section has a descriptive heading and opens with the answer, without depending on what you said three paragraphs earlier.
3. The basics still rule
AI Mode relies on Google's index. Everything that helps in search helps here:
- Your pages are indexed and Googlebot can read them.
- Correct structured data. Check it with the structured data inspector.
- Content with concrete, up-to-date data.
- Signals of experience and authorship.
Blocking Google-Extended doesn't take you out of Google's results. What does take you out of everything, AI Mode included, is blocking Googlebot. Check your robots.txt with the AI crawler tool.
4. Measure whether it cites you
Since 2026 Search Console has a generative AI report showing how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, but not which searches triggered them, the clicks, or who got cited instead of you. The direct way is to ask it: run your key searches in AI Mode and record whether you appear, whether it cites you and who appears in your place. The method is in how to track your visibility in ChatGPT and works the same way here.

Frequently asked questions

- Can I see how much traffic AI Mode sends me?
- Only partly. Since 2026 Search Console has a generative AI report with your pages' impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country and date. It has no clicks and no queries, so to know whether AI Mode cites you for your key searches you have to ask it directly.
