How to Track Your Visibility in ChatGPT

By Fernando Balcázar · Updated October 25, 2026

To track your visibility in ChatGPT you need three things: the right questions, a way of asking that doesn't bias the result, and a log that lets you compare over time. You can do it by hand, today, with no tool at all.

This guide is about measuring. If you want to improve your presence, read how to appear in ChatGPT. If you already measured and a competitor shows up in your place, read what to check when ChatGPT recommends your competitor.

1. Pick the questions your customer would ask

The most common mistake is asking about your brand: "what is [my company]?". That measures whether ChatGPT knows you, not whether it recommends you. What matters are the questions where your customer doesn't yet know who to buy from:

  • Category: "which invoicing software is best for a small business?"
  • Problem: "how do I reduce cancellations at my restaurant?"
  • Comparison: "which is better for a clinic, X or Y?"
  • Local, if it applies: "which travel agency in Austin organizes group trips?"

Build a short list, ten to twenty questions, and write them the way a person would, not as keywords. If you have Search Console, the long question-shaped searches that already bring you impressions are a good starting point.

2. Ask without biasing the result

  • Use a temporary chat or a clean account. ChatGPT can personalize with your history and memory; if you've spent months telling it about your company, it will mention you more than it would for a stranger.
  • Turn on web search. With search, ChatGPT checks current pages and cites them; without it, it answers from what it learned in training. They're two different measurements: decide which one matters to you and don't mix them.
  • Paste the exact same question every time. Changing one word changes the answer.

3. Record the same things for every answer

For each question, log:

FieldWhat to record
Mentioned?Yes or no
PositionFirst, top three, or further down
Cited?Whether it links to your site as a source
Who appearsThe brands it mentions instead of you
Sources citedThe sites it uses: comparisons, forums, competitors

A spreadsheet is enough. The most valuable column is usually who appears: it tells you who you're competing with in AI, which isn't always who you compete with in Google.

4. Repeat, because a single test misleads

ChatGPT never answers the same way twice. The same question can mention you on Monday and leave you out on Tuesday, and that's normal. That's why a one-off test isn't a diagnosis.

Run the same list on different days and compute a percentage: out of all the answers, how many include you. That number, compared week over week, is your visibility in ChatGPT. What matters is the direction, not one day's value.

5. Interpret without overreaching

  • You appear rarely and get cited rarely: first check that ChatGPT can read your site. The steps are in how to allow AI crawlers.
  • You get mentioned but not cited: it knows you, but uses other pages as sources. Look at which ones it cites and what they have that your content doesn't.
  • The same brand always appears: study which sources back it. There are usually third-party comparisons or reviews behind it.

When to automate it

The manual method works, but it costs hours every week, and ChatGPT is only one engine. Your customer also asks Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI results.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether ChatGPT mentions my brand?
Ask the questions your customer would ask, in a new conversation with web search on, and record whether you appear, in what position and which sources it cites. Repeat it on different days: a single answer isn't representative because ChatGPT never answers the same way twice.
Why does ChatGPT give me different answers each time?
Because generative answers are probabilistic and, when it uses web search, they depend on what it finds at that moment. That's why the useful measurement is a percentage across several questions and several days, not a yes or no.
Does my chat history affect what I see?
It can. ChatGPT can use memory and previous conversations to personalize. To measure, use a temporary chat or an account with no history related to your brand.
Is a mention the same as a citation?
No. A mention is ChatGPT naming your brand in the answer. A citation is it linking to your site as a source. A mention builds brand; a citation can also bring visits.
