How to Appear in Gemini

By Fernando Balcázar · Updated October 25, 2026

Gemini is Google's artificial intelligence assistant: an app and a chat where people ask questions and get written answers, often with sources. Appearing in those answers depends on two things you control: that Google can read and use your site, and that your content is the best available answer.

Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode aren't the same thing

Google has three AI surfaces and it's worth not mixing them up, because your visibility can differ on each:

SurfaceWhere it appearsHow people use it
GeminiThe Gemini app and websiteConversation with an assistant
AI OverviewsAt the top of search resultsQuick summary of a search
AI ModeA conversational search tab in GoogleComplex search with follow-up questions

This guide is about Gemini. For the other two, read how to appear in Google AI Overviews and how to appear in Google AI Mode.

1. Make sure you're properly indexed in Google

When Gemini needs current information, it relies on the Google Search index. If your pages aren't indexed, for Gemini they practically don't exist.

  • Check in Search Console that your important pages are indexed.
  • Fix whatever takes them out of the index: forgotten noindex tags, wrong canonicals, pages blocked in robots.txt.
  • Keep a clean sitemap. You can check it with our sitemap validator.

2. Decide carefully about Google-Extended

Google-Extended is the robots.txt directive that tells Google whether it can use your content for its AI models. According to Google's documentation, it controls two things: the training of Gemini models and the use of your content to ground answers in the Gemini app.

What it does not control is your presence in search: blocking Google-Extended doesn't take you out of Google Search or AI Overviews, and it isn't a ranking signal.

The practical takeaway: if you want to appear in the Gemini app, don't block Google-Extended. If you'd rather your content not be used to train models, that's a valid decision, but make it knowing what it implies. You can see what you have today with our AI crawler tool.

3. Write content that can be cited

Gemini, like the other engines, prefers sources that answer directly:

  • The answer at the top. The first or second sentence should answer the question.
  • Concrete data. Prices, timelines, conditions, figures. Specific gets cited; vague doesn't.
  • One page, one topic. A page trying to cover five topics isn't the best source for any of them.
  • Clear structure. Headings, lists and tables a model can read without ambiguity.

4. Reinforce who you are

Gemini relies on what Google knows about your brand. It helps when that information is consistent everywhere:

  • Structured data for your organization (Organization) and your articles (Article). Check them with the structured data inspector.
  • A Google Business Profile with correct information.
  • Visible authorship and an "about us" page with verifiable facts.

5. Measure

Ask Gemini the questions your customer would ask and record whether you appear, whether it cites you and who appears in your place. The method is the same one we explain for tracking your visibility in ChatGPT: a fixed list of questions, clean conversations and a log you repeat on different days.

AEON42 measures Gemini every week alongside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. For the full picture, read what AI visibility is.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gemini the same as Google AI Overviews?
No. Gemini is Google's assistant: an app and a chat where people have conversations. AI Overviews are the AI summaries at the top of search results, and AI Mode is the conversational search inside Google. They share technology, but they're different surfaces and your visibility can differ on each.
Does blocking Google-Extended take me out of Gemini?
It can affect you. According to Google's documentation, Google-Extended controls whether your content is used to train Gemini models and to ground answers in the Gemini app with content from Google's index. It doesn't affect your presence or ranking in Google Search. If appearing in the Gemini app matters to you, don't block it.
Do I need to rank in Google to appear in Gemini?
It helps a lot. When Gemini looks up current information, it relies on the Google Search index. A site Google doesn't index well is unlikely to be a source for Gemini.
